New Poll shows 84% of Americans don’t support U.S. involvement in Israel-Iran war

A new national poll shows that an overwhelming 84% of Americans do not support U.S. military involvement in the ongoing conflict between Israel and Iran, highlighting a growing disconnect between Washington’s pro-Israel stance and public opinion.
The poll, conducted June 13–16 by The Economist and YouGov, found that only 16% of Americans believe the U.S. military should get involved. A full 60% said the U.S. should stay out of the conflict, while 24% remain unsure.
Despite the bipartisan political backing Israel enjoys in Congress, public support is far more cautious. Even among Republicans, 53% oppose intervention, alongside 65% of Democrats and 61% of Independents.
Americans View Iran as Hostile, But Still Reject War
Although half of Americans (50%) say Iran is an enemy and another 25% view it as “unfriendly,” the vast majority still reject military action. The poll shows that only 24% consider Iran’s nuclear program an “immediate and serious threat”, undermining the alarmist narrative often used to justify Israeli aggression or U.S. intervention.
Only 18% of Americans favor threatening Iran with military force to curb its nuclear activities, with most preferring diplomatic or economic solutions.
The data comes days after Israel launched missile strikes inside Iran, targeting nuclear facilities. The Institute for Science and International Security cited Fordow’s extreme fortification as a likely reason for Israel’s avoidance. Mark Dubowitz of the Foundation for Defense of Democracies noted that only the U.S. military could destroy the site—a move that would almost certainly provoke a regional war.
In retaliation, Iran launched airstrikes into Israeli territory, killing at least 24 people and damaging a U.S. Embassy branch in Tel Aviv, according to Fox News.
Trump Pushes Escalation Despite Overwhelming Public Opposition
Former President Donald Trump appears to be ignoring the public’s desire for restraint. In a series of threatening Truth Social posts, Trump targeted Iran’s leadership directly:
“We know exactly where the so-called ‘Supreme Leader’ is hiding. He is an easy target… We are not going to take him out (kill!), at least not for now. But we don’t want missiles shot at civilians, or American soldiers. Our patience is wearing thin.”
He followed that with a post demanding “UNCONDITIONAL SURRENDER!”
Trump later claimed, without verification, that “We now have complete and total control of the skies over Iran.”
Americans Disapprove of Trump’s Handling of Israel and Iran
Despite his hardline stance, 44% of Americans disapprove of Trump’s handling of Israel, while 41% disapprove of his handling of Iran, according to the poll. The results reflect growing discomfort among U.S. voters with policies that unconditionally support Israel’s military operations, even when they provoke broader regional instability.
The YouGov poll surveyed 1,512 U.S. adults and carries a margin of error of ±3.3%.
